This is book 2 in the Agents series by Brynne Asher and let me just say this right now:

Brynne Asher writes government agents like they’re exhausted emotional support pit bulls.

And honestly?

I’m into it.

Also, this is the SECOND book in a row where a doctor is making decisions that make me question where these people got their degrees 😭

📚 The Situation

Meet Evie Litchfield.

Doctor of geriatric medicine.

Wealthy Miami family.

Beautiful house.

Precious little son named Chase.

And unfortunately…

Married to a bum named Jeff.

Now when I say “bum,” I don’t mean:

“oh he’s struggling.”

No.

I mean:

This man hasn’t worked in TWO YEARS while his wife:

– runs a medical practice

– raises their son

– hires a nanny

…and he’s just out here on boats vibing.

💀 The Chaos Begins Immediately

The book opens with Evie explaining divorce to her son.

Then suddenly—

HER BRAKES GO OUT.

Car crash.

Boom.

Fast forward six months later and she’s STILL in this miserable marriage because apparently her husband being unemployed and emotionally absent wasn’t enough motivation.

Enter:

Micah Emmett.

DEA agent.

Grumpy former D1 offensive lineman

Tattooed.

Built like somebody who throws refrigerators recreationally.

And on PAGE 13—

this man is at her front door like an aggressive Girl Scout with devastating news.

Because Jeff?

Didn’t just cheat.

Didn’t just lie.

This loser put a HIT out on his wife and child.

OH.

So we’re doing attempted family annihilation now???

💀 Character Energy

Evie (FMC):

Now listen.

I liked Evie.

BUT.

This woman stressed me OUT.

Because after learning her husband hired someone to kill her and her son…

She goes BACK to the house.

THE SAME HOUSE.

Where he still:

– has keys

– knows the alarm code

– knows the layout

Girl???

Where did you go to medical school?

The Aladdin Academy for Wishful Thinking???

Because this is the second doctor in a row making decisions with the survival instincts of a decorative throw pillow.

BUT—

What I appreciated is that Brynne Asher writes women who still feel competent.

Evie is:

– smart

– capable

– emotionally layered

– loving toward her son

She just also happens to be stubborn as a mule.

Micah (MMC):

Now THIS man?

Excellent.

Grumpy.

Funny.

Protective.

Emotionally intelligent.

And what I really appreciate about this series is the MEN HAVE BOUNDARIES.

Do you know how rare that is in romance these days???

Micah takes time.

The attraction is there immediately—but the story actually BUILDS.

There’s emotional development.

Longing.

Conflict.

And because of that?

When the relationship finally happens, it feels earned.

And honestly the Montana family scenes were some of the best parts of the book.

😏 What Worked

Brynne Asher does a few things REALLY well:

– strong female characters

– emotionally aware MMCs

– pacing that actually develops relationships

– layered world-building

And unlike a lot of romantic suspense books, this one doesn’t feel rushed emotionally.

Even though Micah and Evie move fast physically, the emotional connection feels believable because of how much time we spend in Micah’s internal conflict.

This man is sitting on a thousand-acre ranch staring into firepits processing FEELINGS.

That’s romance 😭

😒 What Didn’t Work

The ending?

A little rushed.

And I really wish the author had gone deeper into Micah’s relationship with the friend connected to his sister’s death.

Because THAT emotional thread had real weight and I wanted more of it.

Did I like this more than book 1?

No.

But did I still have a good time?

Absolutely.

This series works because the characters feel like REAL people with real histories, families, baggage, and emotional blind spots.

And Brynne Asher understands something important:

Attraction is easy.

Emotional intimacy is the actual story.
